Executive Summary: The Davao City Seminary Gate project aims to establish a unique academic and cultural hub on Samal Island, Philippines. This initiative, set to unfold over the next decade, combines theological education with artistic expression and outdoor activities. Key features include:
• A 100-hour accelerator program from July 25-31, 2024 • Collaboration with the Global Expeditionary Award (GEA) and GBG Artists-in-residency program • Development of facilities including pottery kilns, a dive shop, and a sea-view modalities cafe and clinic • Extension of King's College's fine arts department through an Art House • Integration of M.A. (Theology) studies with creative arts and marine sports
This holistic approach leverages Samal Island's natural beauty to foster spiritual growth, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning.
Our mission for the Davao City Seminary Gate was to establish an academic foothold during the 100 hour accelerator spread over 7 days from 25 July - 31 July in collaboration with GEA assets including our GBG Artists-in-residency program headed by Fine Arts Director Mart ("Macky") Henry Bongabong based on Samal Island. Some of the goals in this remote campus initiative are: pottery kilns, dive shop, sea-view modalities cafe and clinic. Drawing on partnership and collaboration with M.H.B over the past 15 years, we enter a new stage as doors of utterance have opened among several Kingdom "hubs" in the vicinity of Davao City.
This initiative aims to establish an Art House on Samal Island as an extension of the fine arts department under King's College over the next 10 years. The new campus will serve as a hub for cultural exchange, offering programs in marine sports and a pottery studio. Additionally, it will function as an academic base for the M.A. (Theology) program at the Oikos Seminary Gate, providing students with a unique blend of theological studies and artistic expression in a serene island setting.
This expansion aligns with our mission to foster creativity and spiritual growth, while also leveraging the natural beauty and resources of Samal Island. The marine sports program will take advantage of the island's coastal environment, while the pottery studio will draw inspiration from local artisanal traditions. This holistic approach will enrich the academic experience for our M.A. (Theology) students and create new opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and community engagement.
From July 25 to 28, participants will stay at Hagimit Falls on the Garden Island of Samal, hosted by Sir Macky. This phase focuses on reviewing the Global Expeditionary Award (GEA) and engaging with potential Filipino candidates through creative initiatives and leadership recognition.
The subsequent phase, from July 28 to 31, will be conducted at the Davao City Seminary Gate, with accommodations at Seda Abreeza Hotel on the mainland of Mindanao. This intensive academic session is organized by Oikos Fellowship Singapore and aims to provide training updates for the Graduating Classes of 2025 and 2027 at King’s College Seminary. The 100-hour course covers the use of AI in Notion for graduate research, theological reflection, and documentation for the M.A. (Theology) degree.
Key participants include Feve Gib-awen and Ria Cuagat representing GC2025, and Daphne Lim representing Oikos Fellowship Singapore.
