Academics & Admissions at the Seminary Gate

In the early 2000s, Geylang was known for its vibrant nightlife and was often associated with activities that drew a less than favorable reputation. However, beneath this bustling exterior, a quiet transformation was beginning to take place, driven by the tireless efforts of numerous gospel workers. These dedicated individuals, often unnamed and unrecognized, felt a calling to sow seeds of hope and compassion in the heart of Geylang.

These gospel workers initiated various community outreach programs, focusing on providing support to the underprivileged and marginalized communities within Geylang. Through street intercessions and relentless dedication, they began to form meaningful relationships with the residents, offering not just spiritual guidance but also practical assistance in areas such as education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

As the years progressed, these efforts started to bear fruit. The sense of community within Geylang strengthened, and a new spirit of resilience and unity emerged. Local businesses began to reflect this positive change, with many choosing to support the community initiatives spearheaded by the gospel workers.

By the 2010s, the transformation of Geylang was becoming more evident. The area saw a decrease in crime rates and an increase in community-driven projects. Residents took pride in their neighborhood, and Geylang began to shed its former image, becoming a symbol of what dedicated community work could achieve.

Today, Geylang stands as a testament to the power of selfless dedication and faith-driven action. The nameless and faceless gospel workers who once quietly walked its streets have left an indelible mark, turning Geylang into a vibrant, thriving community. Their legacy continues to inspire new generations of community workers across the city.

Personal history of this period

Here's a brief story of how we ended up in Geylang-Kallang, at the head of the dragon "ya-loong" near Lor-3. We got the key to our current rental after a night vision about an inheritance. This was supernatural guidance since Oikos had no natural inclination toward the district designated as the "red-light" (RDL) area.

A tree of life appeared in the East wing at 175a next door, signaling the many ministry "pilots" flying into the now-defunct control tower—claiming and taking over what rightfully belonged to the King. Through other visions and dreams, it became clear that Jesus sought the brothel and street communities, as well as the properties and shophouses around the temples and mosques, for His own purpose.

From the time of that revelation around the Asian Tsunami to the collapse of the stronghold of the Lion Dance troupe at 173a last year, nearly 20 years have passed. I want to clarify that our Oikos team had no way of knowing the timeline.

FCBC sent a pastor who had been in the RDL for 10 years before me; he reported "not one soul won" under his watch. He simply blessed me, shook my hand, and moved on to his next assignment in Bandar Aceh. Cathedral had several intercessors walking and claiming ground, especially one persistent gospel worker, Wee Lay Chin active on the streets since the late 1990’s. Currently, a Chinese national from Our Saviours Church, Debbie Zhang, is still active among the PeiToo freelancers. I had the privilege of officiating her wedding to Kelvin Loh.

Over the years, YWAM (SBS + DTS + Tamar), Hagar (Michael Lee), OMF (Edwin Koh), Scarlet Web (Greg Vijayendran, Cheryl Lee), along with many covert government agencies, ombudsmen, and groups like Cornerstone (Tim Weerasekera), the FMM (Sr Mary Soh) and Breakthrough after-care (George Butron) have been involved. Independent workers, women's groups, medical missions, counselors, legal clinics, student researchers from NUS/SMU/NTU/BTC/LKYSPP, and activists like Project X, the gay church, and many more leftist and liberal groups with their own agendas have also contributed.

Enter the Elijah Fathers (circa 2020)

The entrance of the 456 Family Prayer Altar during the Covid-19 health scare in 2020 marked a significant turning point in the ongoing narrative of God's work in Geylang. Faced with unprecedented challenges, this group brought a fresh wave of spiritual fervor and intercessory prayer, focusing on the community's health and well-being.

Post-pandemic, their intergenerational witness became a beacon of hope near the former Lion Dance troupe at 173a. The prayer altar served as both a spiritual refuge and a hub for community support, drawing together different generations to seek divine guidance and healing. Their presence reinvigorated local efforts, emphasizing unity and resilience in the face of adversity.

This period saw a renewed commitment to the community's spiritual and physical health, with the 456 Family Prayer Altar playing a pivotal role in maintaining the momentum of transformation in Geylang. Their story is a testament to the power of faith-driven action in fostering a unified, thriving community.

Protect Singapore by Jason Wong

The Protect Singapore movement, led by Jason Wong and his team at 173b Geylang Road, has passionately targeted specific groups to advocate for traditional family values. Among parents, the movement emphasises the importance of nurturing a supportive home environment that upholds cultural and moral values, aiming to strengthen family bonds and guide children towards responsible adulthood.
