God’s sufficient grace is man’s super-abundance! When we think of water from the rock, we must not think of a backyard spigot. Instead imagine a 3-storey high gusher supplying the unwashed masses. This is sufficient grace from the King whose motto is: pressed down, shaken together and running over.

When your logistics is under direct control of the Crown “we lack no good thing” and what we have is “more than sufficient”. Like Joseph of old, our boughs are full and low-hanging even to the edges of our fields. The church is the only body on earth completely underwritten and organised for the expressed benefit of its non-members.

Some will not think to eat and after eating wipe their mouths. Others however will be pricked to the heart. They, having eaten, will look for others to pass it on. C.S. Lewis once said, Christianity is simply one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.

#sufficient unto the day #eye has not seen #ear has not heard #experience God’s love #pass it on

Reflecting on Decades of Discipleship

Yesterday, I witnessed 40 years of discipleship in one morning. I attended the 456 franchise at KLC International Campus in AMK with the Elijah dads, including Paul, Geoff, Ben, Ying Hwee, GuoJun, WeeSong, and others, for the 50 days of prayer before National Day.

Reunion and Discussion at Han's Union

Later, I reunited with Kenneth Wong ("BroKen"). I was with Macky Bongabong, our MHB celebrity artist, who is here to celebrate his July birthday. We met at Han’s Union at Springleaf MRT station to discuss discipleship topics: leadership, service, didactics, revelation, potential, heuristics, and other issues at the threshold of our 4th decade in the Oikos movement.

Reflecting on History

Interestingly, BroKen, a marine architect by training, was our first Oikos camp speaker in 1991 at Admiralty Club in the now-defunct Yishun Country Club. It was fascinating to reflect on the 4 decades from Oikos’s beginning in the early ‘90s to now as the church in flats in the city of faith.

Responsibility of Independence

Independence brings great responsibility. Theodore Hertzl's "Jewish State" outlines Israel's strategic plan and serves as a blueprint for smaller states like Singapore, striving for solid foundations—a milestone Hertzl never witnessed. Like Moses, who saw the Promised Land from afar, Hertzl said, "If you will it, it is not a dream."

Walking in the Unseen Light

An independent ecclesia must "walk in the light that cannot be seen," embracing the mystery of not knowing. "Jesus is Lord" means He rarely telegraphs His plans. A church claiming to be "independent" must be vigilant and mindful not to take independence for granted.

Vigilant Oversight

Independence requires vigilant oversight of assets, both natural and unseen. Every relationship is crucial, bringing us closer to the spiritual "Water from the Rock" mentioned in last week's Torah portion. This concept introduces the idea of the “pregnant wrong answer” (Richard Sennett in Craftsmanship) —a new way of understanding our work in the Lord that is “not in vain” (1Cor15:56).
