Course Title: Understanding Biblical Womanhood: The Role of Ezer Kenegdo

Course Description:

This course (worth 3 credits) delves into the term "Ezer Kenegdo" from the book of Genesis, emphasizing its role in interpreting biblical womanhood. Building on Dr. Skip Moen's research, we explore the position of women in the biblical context, both as supportive companions and as those who stand in opposition when men deviate from their course. We also investigate the concept of strong Christian femininity as implied by Ezer Kenegdo.

The course also discusses monogamy, tracing its roots back to the creation of time. We explore the formation of the first father and mother from the dust, leading to the birth of the nuclear family. This family serves as the starting point of a river flowing through history and pre-history to the present day, shaping humanity in the image of its Creator. This journey helps us understand the question, "What is a woman?"

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Define and understand the term "Ezer Kenegdo" and its implications for biblical womanhood.
  2. Analyze the portrayal of women in the book of Genesis, with a focus on the term "Ezer Kenegdo".
  3. Discuss and critique the model of strong Christian femininity as suggested by the interpretation of Ezer Kenegdo.
  4. Apply insights from this biblical interpretation to a broader socio-cultural understanding of womanhood. Discuss its relevance in contemporary society, considering the legal definition within Singapore law as enshrined in the Singapore Women's Charter. This Charter was originally ordained on 15 September 1961 by the framers of the Constitution and has been upheld to this day.

Week 4-6: Biblical Womanhood and Genesis
